Drama and Language Arts

Once upon a time...

Language arts can be incorporated into Dramatic Arts in many more ways than those experienced in my drama class this past term. Ideas range from having students create their own plays, creating their own story and acting them out, or reading and reflecting a written piece and then turning it into a dramatic performance.

After a few weeks in drama it was clear to me that language and drama working together could benefit the students very much in their expressive journey. Because of this I brought drama into my students written fairytale assignment.

Students were read various versions of fractured fairytales and traditional fairytales. Students were directed to create, following the package and outlines, their own fractured fairytales. One catch - students would then cast their own fairytales with peers in the classroom. After all the initial writing process was completed, marked and given feedback, the whole class voted on three final fractured fairytales written by the students themselves. These three fairytales were spin offs on Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Bean Stalk, and the Three Little Pigs. Students were casted as different characters in the three different fractured fairytales and they were presented to the class! As stated in my dance blog, I was not required to teach the arts to my students as they had a direct teacher for that, but I was happy to see students acting out their own creative stories. They brought the fairytales to life and were able to identify the differences between the ones they were acting in and the traditional fairytales.

Students completed a writing package, a rough draft, a good copy which was then binded into a fractured fairytale book for their classroom library and created a performance of three of the chosen fairytales. Students were able to be creative, not only through their writing process, but also through becoming the characters and seeing the differences between the traditional and their fractured versions. Bringing drama into language arts can and will always benefit the student's creative process and ability to express themselves.

Thanks for following me along this journey!
